The automation jobs are moving out of the metros
Most automation engineers still run the same five-city search: Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi NCR. The manufacturing build-out stopped following that map some time ago. Here is where the panels are actually going up, which platforms each belt runs, and the honest trade-offs of taking a role there.
The belts worth knowing, and what each one actually runs
These are the clusters drawing large-scale manufacturing investment. The platform notes below reflect what dominates the industrial base in each belt — check any specific employer before you plan a move around it.
Hubli-Dharwad, Belagavi, Tumakuru
Karnataka's industrial growth now runs through corridors well beyond Bengaluru, with state-backed development pulling automotive and aerospace component manufacturing into these cities.

A long-established engineering and manufacturing hub now also drawing global capability centres, on the strength of an engineering talent pipeline suited to product engineering and technical operations.

- One of the few Tier-2 belts with both plant-floor and engineering-office career paths
Aurangabad, Nagpur
Established auto, pharma and engineering clusters with continuing investment, and close enough to Pune's ecosystem to keep the market liquid without Pune's competition for every role.

Vadodara, Surat

Four reasons this is worth a serious look

| Wider scope, earlier | In a large metro setup you tend to own a subsystem. In a growing Tier-2 plant or OEM you own the panel, the programme, the vendor relationship and the commissioning. That breadth is what makes you promotable — and it is the exposure senior roles screen for. |
| Different money arithmetic | The headline CTC may be similar or slightly lower. Against Tier-2 living and housing costs the disposable outcome is often better. Run the arithmetic on your own numbers before you dismiss a role on CTC alone. |
| Senior seats being created | These plants are building leadership layers now. "Head of Electrical & Automation" titles are being created in growing Tier-2 operations, while in established metro businesses that layer already exists and rarely turns over. |
The trade-offs, stated straight
- Fewer fallback employers. If the role does not work out, a metro gives you ten other options in the same city. A Tier-2 belt may give you two. This is the real risk and it deserves weight.
- Smaller professional network. Fewer peers, fewer meetups, fewer chance conversations that turn into your next role. You have to work harder to stay visible.
- Family considerations. Schooling, healthcare and a partner's career are genuine constraints, not excuses. They are often the deciding factor and they should be.
- Employer quality varies widely. Some of these plants are world-class. Some are not. The belt is not the point — the specific employer and the specific scope are.
The rule: do not move to a city. Move to a defined employer with a defined scope, having checked what the platform environment and the project pipeline actually look like.
Getting seen in a belt you do not live in
The hard part is not that these employers are not hiring. It is that many of them do not run large public campaigns. Roles get filled through networks, through integrators, and through specialist desks that already know who is qualified and who is genuinely open to relocating.
Three things that actually work:
- Say the city out loud. Put the belts you would consider on your profile and in your applications. Most engineers leave location silent, so a manager screening for someone who will actually relocate has no way to find them.
- Match the stack to the belt. A process-control CV lands in Vadodara. A machine-and-motion CV lands in Rajkot or Hubli. Applying to the wrong belt with the right skills reads as a scattergun.
- Be mapped before the role opens. When a plant needs a controls engineer for a site date, the shortlist is drawn from engineers who are already known and already qualified — usually before anything is posted.
