What automation engineers actually earn in India
A specialist pay guide for control-systems engineers — by role, experience, city and platform depth. Built by recruiters who negotiate these offers, not scraped off a single job board.
All figures are indicative market bands from public aggregators, normalised against what we see on live mandates. Honest caveats included — because vague salary pages help no one.
Why automation salary numbers are all over the place
Search "automation engineer salary India" and you'll get figures from ₹5 lakh to ₹16 lakh for the same job title. That's not because the data is wrong — it's because the title is doing too much work.
The biggest distortion: "automation engineer" lumps OT/industrial controls in with IT test-automation and RPA. A Selenium/RPA "automation engineer" in a Bengaluru software firm and a PLC commissioning engineer on a plant floor are different jobs with different pay curves — but aggregators average them together. This guide is OT / industrial controls only.
So treat every number below as a band, not a quote. Your actual offer is set far more by platform depth, commissioning experience and sector than by your title.
Salary by role (indicative bands, ₹/year)
Annual gross. Bands blend public aggregator ranges with TVP's recruiter view; the spread is real and driven by the factors further down this page.
| Role | Entry · 0–2 yrs | Mid · 3–6 yrs | Senior · 7 yrs+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLC / Controls EngineerSiemens, Rockwell, Schneider, Mitsubishi | ₹3.5–6 L | ₹6–12 L | ₹12–20 L |
| SCADA EngineerWinCC, FactoryTalk, AVEVA, Ignition | ₹3.5–5.5 L | ₹5.5–11 L | ₹11–18 L |
| DCS Engineer (process)DeltaV, Experion, CENTUM VP, PCS 7 | ₹4–7 L | ₹7–14 L | ₹14–22 L |
| Instrumentation & Controlfield, loop, calibration, EPC | ₹3–5 L | ₹5–11 L | ₹11–18 L |
| Automation Engineer (OT)multi-platform machine/line automation | ₹3.5–6 L | ₹6–12 L | ₹12–20 L |
Premium specialisms sit above these bands: Functional Safety / SIS (IEC 61511) and OT Cybersecurity (IEC 62443) command the strongest offers because the talent pool is thin — but published salary data for them is sparse, so we don't quote a false-precision number. Ask us for a live read instead.
The experience curve — and where the pull is strongest
Pay isn't linear with years. Demand concentrates in the commissioning-capable middle, which is also where offers move fastest.
Entry (0–2 yrs) · ₹3.5–6 L — Fresher intake exists across PLI plants, but employers want hands-on panel/commissioning exposure, not just a certificate. A diploma plus real site time beats a degree plus none.
Mid (3–6 yrs) · ₹6–13 L — The sweet spot. Commissioning-capable, works independently, still affordable — the band employers pull hardest for, and where a platform switch or a move into DCS/SIS can step-change your number.
Senior (7–12 yrs) · ₹13–22 L — Lead / SI project roles, multi-platform depth, commissioning leadership. Strong demand but more selective by platform and sector.
12+ yrs · ₹22 L+ — Manager, architect or platform SME. Fewer seats, very specific — pay is real but narrow.
Where the pay is — geography still matters
Indicative mid-level pull. Metros lead on headline numbers; process and EPC belts pay strongly at senior DCS/instrumentation level.
Chennai
Auto & electronics hub; among the highest metro averages for automation roles. Strong machine-builder and MES demand.
Bengaluru
Robotics OEMs, Industry 4.0 and the deepest OT-cyber/MES talent — broad range, high ceiling.
Pune
Automotive & machine-building capital with a dense integrator base; strong PLC/SCADA + robotics pay.
Vadodara & Gujarat belt
Petrochem, power and EPC — DCS and instrumentation pay strongly at senior level, often above metro discrete-manufacturing roles.
Ahmedabad–Dholera–Sanand
Semiconductor fabs and process plants driving a fresh wave of senior controls demand.
Hyderabad & NCR
Pharma/life-sciences validation (Hyderabad) and electronics/auto-components (Noida–NCR) — steady mid-to-senior demand.
City averages are the noisiest figures of all (small samples, title mixing). Use them for direction, not as a quote — sector and platform usually outweigh city.
The levers that actually change your offer
Title and years set the band. These set where in the band you land — and how often you jump to the next one.
Commissioning & SAT experience ▲ biggest lever
Field-proven engineers who can close out a site command more than screen-only programmers at the same years. It's the single strongest differentiator we see.
Dual-platform depth ▲ ~10–15%
Working across both Siemens (TIA) and Rockwell (Studio 5000) makes you deployable on more projects — and the market pays for it.
DCS + Functional Safety (SIS) ▲ premium
Process control plus IEC 61511 safety depth is a scarce combination; oil & gas, power and pharma pay up for it.
OT Cybersecurity (IEC 62443) ▲ rising
As plants connect, IT/OT security skills are among the fastest-rising and hardest to fill — a genuine pay accelerant.
Sector
Oil & gas, EPC and pharma typically pay above discrete manufacturing for the same role, reflecting risk, standards and project value.
Mobility
Willingness to travel and take on site/commissioning roles widens your options and lifts offers, especially at mid level.
How these bands are built
Authority comes from being checkable. Here's exactly where the numbers come from — and what we don't claim.
Blended bands, not a single scrape
Each band blends published ranges from multiple public salary aggregators, normalised against what Talent Vertex Partners sees on live mandates placing control-systems engineers across India. We present ranges, not point figures, because the honest spread is wide — and we strip out IT test-automation/RPA roles that contaminate "automation engineer" averages.
