Instrumentation Engineer job description, written by automation engineers
A copy-ready instrumentation engineer job description for India, with the salary band, the screening questions that separate hands-on engineers from keyword CVs, and the mistakes that fill your inbox with the wrong people. An instrumentation engineer selects, installs, calibrates and commissions the field instruments and control valves that measure and move a process — and proves every loop back to the control system. Job title
Instrumentation Engineer — [platform family] · [city / site]
About the role
We are hiring an Instrumentation Engineer for [project / plant] in [oil & gas / chemicals / power / pharma] to own field instrumentation from datasheet to loop check, working with the DCS/PLC team through commissioning and handover.
What you will do
- Prepare and review instrument datasheets, specifications, index and hook-up drawings
- Size and select transmitters, flowmeters, analysers and control valves for the process
- Supervise installation, calibration and documentation of field instruments
- Run loop checks and functional checks with the DCS/PLC team; clear punch lists
- Configure smart instruments over HART or FOUNDATION Fieldbus
- Support start-up, troubleshooting and handover
What you must have
- [3–8] years in field instrumentation on [process type] — name the plant and your scope
- Hands-on calibration and loop checking, not only documentation
- Working knowledge of HART; FOUNDATION Fieldbus or PROFIBUS PA where the project uses it
- Reading P&IDs, loop diagrams and hook-ups; ISA-5.1 tag conventions
- B.E./B.Tech in Instrumentation, Electronics or Electrical
Good to have
- Control valve sizing
- Analyser systems
- Hazardous-area practice (IEC 60079)
- Exposure to a safety instrumented system — stated separately from control work
Salary band (India, 2026)
- Entry · 0–2 yrs: ₹3.5–5 L a year
- Mid · 3–6 yrs: ₹6–11 L a year
- Senior · 7 yrs+: ₹12–20 L a year
Questions that separate real experience from a listed skill
Walk me through a loop check you did — what did you inject, where, and what did you check at the control room?
Real answers name the signal, the test equipment and the person on the other end of the radio. Listed-only answers describe the concept.
You certified on a vendor course — what did you do with it afterwards, and on which plant?
A course is evidence of attendance. Look for a named plant and something that went wrong.
Was the trip on that loop in the control system or the SIS?
Control and safety are separate systems and separate competencies. Blurring them is a red flag.
These are the lines our engineers listen for when we screen for client mandates. See how TVP screens a candidate end to end.
Three mistakes that attract the wrong CVs
- One JD for design and site. A datasheet engineer and a commissioning engineer are different people. Say which, or split the role.
- No process named. Refinery, pharma and water instrumentation hire from different pools. Name yours.
- Safety in a footnote. If the role touches SIS, list IEC 61511 work as its own requirement.
