PLC engineer salary in India, per year and per month

A PLC engineer in India earns ₹2–4.5 L a year at entry (0–2 yrs), ₹5–9 L at 3–6 yrs and ₹10–16 L at senior level — about ₹17k–₹38k, ₹42k–₹75k and ₹83k–₹1.33 L gross a month. These are the PLC row of the TVP Automation Salary Guide, built from title-filtered India wage data with IT test-automation records removed. Below: the curve, why public figures disagree, and what actually moves your number.

Gross per month is the annual CTC divided by twelve. In-hand is lower: employer PF, gratuity and any annual variable or retention pay sit inside the CTC, and tax depends on your regime. Check the payslip structure before you compare two offers.

2 — Why figures differ

Why Google shows you five different PLC salaries

Search the question and you will find figures from about ₹3.6 L to ₹18 L a year for the same title. They measure different jobs. Big-sample aggregators fill “PLC engineer” with service technicians, panel-shop roles and juniors; self-reported and modelled sources lean on senior, export-oriented profiles. The worst distortion is the word “automation”: India data for it is dominated by IT test automation — Selenium, SDET, RPA — which is a different job with a different pay curve. Our bands strip those records out before anything is averaged.

So treat any single number as a point on a curve. What decides where you sit is whether you can commission a site on your own, how deep your platform goes, and which sector you work in.

3 — What moves pay

What actually moves a PLC engineer’s salary

  • Discipline, not platform. Moving from PLC into process DCS is the largest single move inside India — roughly double at senior level.
  • Commissioning record. Engineers who can close out a site on their own get shortlisted where screen-only programmers do not. It buys access and leverage more than a different band.
  • Safety and OT security depth. Machinery safety, process SIS (IEC 61511) and OT cybersecurity (IEC 62443) price above the standard PLC curve because the pools are thin — the applied experience is priced, not the certificate.
  • A second PLC brand. Helps you get deployed on more projects; worth a few per cent, not a step change.
  • Sector. Oil & gas, refinery and petrochemical pay above discrete manufacturing for the same role.

4 — By city

Where PLC pay is strongest

Public city averages for “automation engineer” are mostly software-sector averages. Once IT test-automation records are removed, the ranking for controls roles changes:

  • Top India tier: the EPC design offices of Gurgaon and Noida, and the Gujarat process belt (Vadodara and around).
  • Middle: Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad cluster close together.
  • At or below reference: Chennai and Delhi NCR plant roles.
  • Abroad: Gulf operator and mega-project roles are the largest single uplift for an India-based controls engineer.

City is the fourth lever, after discipline, sector and platform. See where new plant hiring is moving in our guide to automation jobs in Tier-2 cities.

FAQ

PLC engineer salary — questions answered

What is the salary of a PLC engineer in India per month?

Gross per month is the annual CTC divided by twelve: about ₹17k–₹38k at entry (0–2 yrs), ₹42k–₹75k at 3–6 yrs and ₹83k–₹1.33 L at senior level (7 yrs+), from annual bands of ₹2–4.5 L, ₹5–9 L and ₹10–16 L. In-hand pay is lower — employer PF, gratuity and any annual variable sit inside CTC.

What does a fresher PLC engineer earn in India?

Indicatively ₹2–4.5 L a year. Where a fresher lands in that band depends on real panel, I/O checkout and site time — a PLC course certificate shows attendance, not hands-on work, and employers price it that way.

Is PLC or DCS better paid?

Process DCS pays more at every stage: ₹4.5–9 L / ₹9–20 L / ₹18–35 L against PLC’s ₹2–4.5 L / ₹5–9 L / ₹10–16 L. Moving from PLC into process DCS is the largest single pay move inside India — roughly double at senior level.

Siemens or Allen-Bradley — which pays more?

Neither by itself. Scarcity in your region and sector decides it. Working across two PLC brands makes you deployable on more projects, but no India study evidences the 10–15% premium that is widely quoted — treat it as worth a few per cent.

Which city pays PLC engineers the most?

For controls roles the top India locations are the EPC design offices of Gurgaon and Noida and the Gujarat process belt. Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad cluster in the middle; Chennai and Delhi NCR plant roles sit at or below the reference. City is the fourth lever — discipline, sector and platform move pay more.
