What automation engineers actually earn in India

A specialist pay guide for control-systems engineers — by role, experience, city and platform depth. Built by recruiters who negotiate these offers, not scraped off a single job board.

Every figure carries its source, sample size and date. India "automation engineer" data is dominated by IT test automation, not industrial OT — those records are excluded here. Where no India data exists, we say so and apply no adjustment rather than estimate one.

Why automation salary numbers are all over the place

Search "automation engineer salary India" and you'll get figures from ₹5 lakh to ₹16 lakh for the same job title. That's not because the data is wrong — it's because the title is doing too much work.

The biggest distortion: "automation engineer" lumps OT/industrial controls in with IT test-automation and RPA. A Selenium/RPA "automation engineer" in a Bengaluru software firm and a PLC commissioning engineer on a plant floor are different jobs with different pay curves — but aggregators average them together. This guide is OT / industrial controls only.

So treat every number below as a band, not a quote. Your actual offer is set far more by platform depth, commissioning experience and sector than by your title.

Automation salary engine

Nine inputs, not three. It returns a band and the reasons — which of your choices moved the number, how far, and what closes the gap to the top decile. Built on title-disambiguated India wage data — source, sample size and date shown for every figure. No sign-up.

Your profile

The one you can commission unsupervised — not the longest list on your CV.

Stacking helps, with diminishing returns — the second one counts ~60%, the third ~35%.

Read the evidence column. Measured means a direct, title-clean India sample exists. Derived means we triangulated it from filtered cuts and named-employer data. Thin means no India survey covers the role at all and the band is our desk view from live mandates — the OT-cyber, MES, substation, robotics and signalling rows are read that way, and the ceilings on them are the least certain figures on this page. We publish the tier rather than hide it. Ask us for a live read on the thin rows.

2 — By Experience

The experience curve — and where the pull is strongest

Pay isn't linear with years. Demand concentrates in the commissioning-capable middle, which is also where offers move fastest.

Entry (0–2 yrs) · ₹2–6 L — The widest relative spread on the page: PLC panel work starts near the bottom, process DCS near the top. Fresher intake exists across PLI plants, but employers want hands-on panel and commissioning exposure, not a certificate. A diploma plus real site time beats a degree plus none.

Mid (3–6 yrs) · ₹5–12 L — The sweet spot, and the one point on the curve where a decision still changes the whole trajectory. Commissioning-capable, works independently, still affordable — the band employers pull hardest for. A move from PLC into process DCS is worth more here than any certificate, any city move and any platform switch.

Senior (7 yrs+) · ₹10–24 L, process DCS to ₹35 L — Lead and project roles, multi-platform depth, commissioning leadership. The band stops being a band here: the split between a PLC lead and a process DCS lead is roughly two-to-one, and sector and platform decide it, not years.

12+ yrs · ₹25 L+ — Manager, architect or platform SME, and increasingly owner's engineer and consultancy seats rather than EPC ones. Fewer roles, very specific — pay is real but the market is narrow, and above this point an overseas EPC or Gulf operator post is usually the larger single step.

These bands are deliberately consistent with the experience read on our India Automation Skills Demand Index — same desk, same market view, updated as it moves.

These are bands. Your number depends on your platform, your city and your project record.

3 — By City

Where the pay is — geography still matters

The most misreported part of this market. Public city averages for "automation engineer" are software-sector averages wearing an industrial job title — strip the IT test-automation records out and the ranking inverts. Ordered below by what OT controls roles actually pay.

Highest

Gulf — operator & mega-project

Aramco, ADNOC, QatarEnergy, NEOM. The largest single uplift available to an India-based controls engineer, and roughly double what a Gulf contractor or SI seat pays. Senior DCS and instrumentation, usually with a commissioning record attached.

Top India tier

Gurgaon & Noida — design offices

EPC and consultancy engineering centres, not plant floors. Owner's-engineer and detail-design seats pay well above the national reference for the same title. This is the highest-paying India location for OT controls, and it is not where the public averages point.

Top India tier

Vadodara & the Gujarat process belt

Petrochem, refinery, power and EPC. The standout India premium for DCS and instrumentation titles, and consistently above metro discrete-manufacturing pay at senior level. Underrated because it is a small sample in every public dataset.

Mid tier

Mumbai · Pune · Bengaluru · Hyderabad

These four cluster close together and sit clearly below the EPC belts for OT roles. Bengaluru and Pune lead on robotics, MES and OT-security depth rather than on base pay; Hyderabad is pharma and life-sciences validation, which measures flat, not premium. Their headline 'top tier' reputation is an IT-sector artefact.

At or below reference

Chennai · Delhi NCR plant roles

Chennai reads slightly below the national reference for controls titles once IT test-automation records are excluded — the auto and electronics base is real, but it is volume, not premium. Plant and site roles inside Delhi NCR sit below the design offices a few kilometres away.

Not priced

Ahmedabad–Sanand–Dholera

We looked for the semiconductor pay surge and could not evidence it. Every circulating figure traced back to unsourced editorial — one of them a real-estate site selling Dholera plots — and TeamLease's FY26 survey does not mention the sector. Real demand is likely; a wage premium is not yet demonstrable, so we apply none.

City is the fourth lever, not the first. Even at the extremes, moving city inside India is worth less than moving discipline or sector. Public city averages are also the noisiest figures published — small samples, heavy title mixing — which is why the calculator above damps them rather than compounding them at face value.

4 — What Moves Your Number

The levers that actually change your offer

Title and years set the band. These set where in the band you land — and how often you jump to the next one.

Commissioning & SAT experience ▲ opens doors, prices small

Field-proven engineers who can close out a site get shortlisted where screen-only programmers do not, and that is real. The pay premium is not. The widely-quoted 20–40% commissioning uplift is anecdotal — PayScale's Commissioning Engineer with Acceptance Testing skills, India cut sits below the general median. The calculator prices mobility small for that reason. It buys you access and leverage, not a different band.

Discipline, not platform ▲ biggest structural jump

Moving from PLC/SCADA into process DCS is the largest single move available inside India — roughly double at senior level. Dual-platform breadth across two PLC brands helps deployability and shortens bench time, but the widely-quoted 10–15% for it is not evidenced in any India study; treat it as worth a few per cent, not a step change.

DCS + Functional Safety (SIS) ▲ scarcity, not certificate

Process control plus IEC 61511 depth is a genuinely scarce combination and oil, gas, refinery and power pay for it. The pay gap is a thin-talent-pool effect — no India wage study evidences a premium for the certificate itself, and the figures that circulate are US vendor marketing. The applied experience is what is priced.

OT Cybersecurity (IEC 62443) ▲ rising · thin evidence

As plants connect, IT/OT security is among the hardest OT skill sets to fill in India, and offers reflect it. Flagged honestly: no India wage survey covers the role, so this band is our desk view from live mandates rather than measured data — the same tier the role table marks it. A scarce-pool effect, not a certificate effect.

Sector

Oil & gas, refinery and petrochemical pay above discrete manufacturing for the same role — risk, standards and project value. Pharma is the exception people get wrong: India GMP/CSV validation engineers measure at roughly ₹6.5–7.5 L against a ₹6.6–8.2 L general median, so we price it flat rather than as a premium.

Mobility

Willingness to travel and take on site/commissioning roles widens your options and lifts offers, especially at mid level.

Methodology & Sources

How these bands are built

Every figure in the calculator above carries its own source, sample size and date on screen. This is the standing method behind them — and the things we checked and could not support.

Blended bands, not a single scrape

Each band is built from title-filtered public wage data and named industrial-employer pages, then checked against what Talent Vertex Partners sees on live mandates placing control-systems engineers across India. The step that matters most is exclusion: India aggregator data for "automation engineer" is dominated by IT test automation — Selenium, SDET, RPA — and those records are stripped out before anything is averaged. We present ranges, not point figures, and we rank source quality: title-filtered cuts and named OT-employer pages first, generic "automation engineer" cuts never.

Sources (May–Jun 2026): PayScale India title-filtered cuts · Glassdoor India · AmbitionBox · 6figr · ERI SalaryExpert · TeamLease FY26 employment outlook · named industrial-employer salary pages · Technologics 2026 recruiter bands — cross-referenced by role, experience and city, IT test-automation records excluded, then normalised against the TVP automation desk in Greater Noida. Where no India differential exists we apply none rather than estimate one, and the calculator says so on screen.
These are indicative market bands compiled by Talent Vertex Partners, not an offer, a guarantee, or an official statistic. Actual pay varies by employer, platform depth, commissioning experience, sector, city and negotiation. Third-party figures belong to their cited sources.
